Meetings in 2009:
Model-Based Methods for Systems Engineering
The term Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has recently become part of the language of Systems Engineering. What is MBSE and why should the Systems Engineering community be interested in it?
To answer these questions we must look at system modeling languages and approaches. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is specified and managed by the Object Management Group (OMG) and used for modeling software systems. The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) introduced extensions to the UML for the purpose of Systems Engineering. Over the past decade a new systems practice in software development called Model Driven Architecture (MDATM) has emerged and is now entering its second generation of specification by the OMG.
This presentation will look at the principles of MBSE and MDATM and what they bring to Systems Engineering. It will review the latest MDATM ideas and look at how they might help us to tackle some of the future Systems Engineering challenges.
CMMI Service Delivery (SD)
A round table discussion on the new Service Delivery process area for Maturity Level 2 in the recently released Service Constellation.
This new PA is titled "Service Delivery" (SD). All the other ML2 PAs remain the same so if you have started implementing ML2 with the Development model it will be a small adjustment to which to the Services model for Process Improvement.
The purpose of Service Delivery (SD) is to deliver services in accordance with service agreements. The Service Delivery process area focuses on the following:
- Establishing and maintaining service agreements
- Preparing and maintaining a service delivery approach
- Preparing for service delivery
- Delivering services
- Receiving and processing service requests
- Maintaining service systems

" Lessons Learned in Motivating Engineering Process Group to Focus on Achieving Business Goals and Not on Just Achieving a Maturity Level"
The next SC-SPIN meeting will be 30 April 2009 and the speaker will start at 6:00 PM. (We are now starting 30 minutes earlier.) We are fortunate to have as our April speaker Girish Seshagiri Founder and CEO of Advanced Information Services Inc. Winner IEEE/SEI Software Process Achievement Award, SEI CMMI Level 5, SEI Partner - CMMI, TSP, PSP. This same presentation is part of the Systems & Software Technology Conference (SSTC 2009) in Salt Lake the week of April 19. This topic is very appropriate for the current business environment and is an area most overlooked when implementing Process Improvement.
"Lessons Learned in
Motivating Engineering Process Group to Focus on Achieving Business Goals and Not on Just Achieving a Maturity Level"
In this presentation we will share a real-life example of the combined use of Goal/Questions/Metrics (GQM) and Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to link Process Improvement (PI) goals with business objectives. We show how we motivated the organization’s Process Group (PG) to focus on achieving business goals and not just achieving a maturity level. Useful lessons learned will be shared
in enabling the EPG to speak the language of business. We demonstrate a practical way to implement the systematic collection and reporting of the vital few project and organization data concerning profitability of projects, employee morale/satisfaction, and customer feedback for quality, value, and timeliness of services rendered. We also discuss the challenges we face in connecting top level business objectives for revenue, earnings before interest and taxes, and new products and services innovation to PI goals.

Quality Assurance
An open discussion on Quality Assurance.
Over the last three years we have covered all the level two process areas except for PPQA. If your organization is planning to commit to a process improvement effort, QA is the most important PA to get into place. With no objective QA audits of your processes, you will not be able to determine the level of implementation of your processes and if your process improvement effort is really helping the bottom line of your organization. This topic should generate a lively discussion, so please plan to attend.
If you are not able to come to the meeting but would like to heard and see what is being discussed, you can access us remotely with audio by phone and presentation material via the web using the following information:
