Meetings in 2007:

Monthly Meeting

Location: SCRA, 5300 International Blvd, Henderson Building (main building in front)
Speaker: Russ Reeves
In this Ontology Overview, high-level concepts will be covered and deep details will be avoided like the plague. At the end of the presentation, you should have a pretty good idea of: What an ontology is; When they are useful; What technologies support them; What the future may hold; and How CMMI could take advantage of the strengths of RDF/OWL. (Institutionalization!)

He has a long history working with tagging languages beginning with SGML for several companies including Kodak, Xerox and IBM. Modus21 is using Business Process Management principles to control, enforce, and audit the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). The benefits and principles of this approach will be discussed and practical application examples will be presented. These will include a case study of Sikorsky Aircraft used Business Process Management Software (BPMS) to automate a support process, and examples of how BPMS could be used to support any organization's CMMI initiatives, both pre and post certification.

The meeting will start at 6:00 PM and the format is the first 1/2 hour for networking then the speaker’s presentation begins at 6:30. The meeting will be held at the SCRA facilities on International Blvd in the Henderson Building (main building in front, 2nd floor). Additional parking can be found in the rear of the complex. Monthly Meeting
Date/Time: Thursday, July 26, 2007, 6:00 PM - 12:00 PM
Location: SCRA, 5300 International Blvd, Henderson Building (main building in front)
Speaker: Round Table Discussion

The most often asked question concerning process improvement using the CMMI is “Where do we start?” The response most given is “Look at OPF!” and “If you are going to maturity level 3 then also look at OPD.” Organizational Process Focus and Organizational Process Definition give guidance on setting up the infrastructure that organizations need to address process improvement using CMMI as the reference model.

The 26 July SC SPIN meeting will be a round table discussion of these two process areas. If you are getting ready to start your improvement effort, this is a meeting to attend as it will help you save time and dollars down the road.

Monthly Meeting
Date/Time: Thursday, June 28, 2007, 6:00 PM - 12:00 PM
Location: SCRA, 5300 International Blvd, Henderson Building (main building in front)
Speaker: Jeff Schwalb (NAVAIR)

Jeff Schwalb has been employed by Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) at China Lake, California since 1984 where he is now the national Team Software Process (TSP) lead. He spent the first ten years of his career developing software intensive real-time embedded range instrumentation systems. He got involved with process improvement in 1993, became a Personal Software Process instructor in 1995, then an observed TSP launch coach in 2001. He has since taught each of the TSP/PSP courses many times and has been involved in the TSP launch and re-launch of several projects across NAVAIR. He is now working with the SEI to extend TSP practices into other domains such as systems engineering and software acquisition. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from California State University Chico in 1986. Jeff has been awarded the 2007 SEI Member Representative Award which is based on the software community’s recognition of Jeff as an accomplished pioneer of principles and practices in software and systems engineering.

Roundtable Discussion About Project Planning
Date/Time: Thursday, May 24, 2007, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Location: SCRA, 5300 International Blvd, Henderson Building (main building in front)
JD Rosser will facilitate the discussion, which has been prompted by several SPIN members talking with him recently about planning and monitoring projects.

As you may recall, we discussed the Requirements Management process area in a previous meeting, which evoked some excellent ideas about how to improve our abilities to gather customer's requirements. This coming discussion involving the Project Planning and Project Monitoring and Control process areas is equally promising.

Some other news is that the SC SPIN web site is now operational at www.scspin.net web site. (Thank You, Dr. Bradham of SCRA!)
